South Benfleet Essex
A postcard of South Benfleet, Essex from around 1900. Traditional timber clad buildings. Unable to identify where this is in modern South Benfleet - it might be on Essex Way.

Benfleet station area
An old photo dating from around 1940 showing Benfleet High Street facing northwards up Essex way. The Hoy and Helmet is visible on the left and the Crown (now Half Crown) on the right. There used to be a building on the corner by the Crown but this was no longer there on the 1937 OS map so the photo is after that date. The Anchor pub is visible in the distance. There are houses on St Mary's church land between the Hoy & Anchor which are no longer there. There is also a house just after the Crown which sticks out further than current property there.

Benfleet station area
An old photo dating from between 1922 and 1937 showing Benfleet High Street facing northwards up Essex way. The war memorial is visible in the distance which was built in 1922. The Hoy and Helmet is visible on the left which appears to be a parade of shops and not just the pub. The Crown (now Half Crown) on the right however there is a building in the foreground of the Crown roughly on the bend to Ferry Rd which is no longer there. This building wasnt there in 1937, so the photo was taken between 1922 and 1937. The Anchor pub is visible in the distance. There are houses on St Mary's church land between the Hoy & Anchor which are no longer there. There is also a house just after the Crown which sticks out further than current property there.

A map of the station area of Benfleet showing the High Street. The OS map is thought to date from around 1922. It clearly shows a property on the corner by the Half Crown (not shown as a pub) and a row of properties on the hill by St Mary's church leading upto the Anchor pub. The war memorial is not shown as this was build April 1922. Part of the Anchor pub is shown as the Post Office.
